The Story of Our Nation
The Da’naxda’xw / Awa’etlala First Nation is an amalgamation of two closely connected tribes of Knight Inlet. Our people have lived throughout this territory for generations, with deep ties to the lands, waters, and traditions that continue to shape who we are today.

Welcome – Our People
The Da’naxda’xw and Awa’etłala peoples came together in the 1800s after significant events reshaped our communities, eventually settling at Tsatsisnukwomi (New Vancouver) on Harbledown Island. Today, we remain part of the Kwakwaka’wakw, the Kwak’wala-speaking peoples whose territories extend across northern Vancouver Island and surrounding waters.
Governance
Our Nation follows a hereditary system, where leadership and responsibilities are passed through generations. This system reflects our values, teachings, and connection to family lineage, with leadership traditionally recognized and honoured through ceremony. Alongside this, elected leadership supports the ongoing governance and administration of the Nation today.
Our People Today
Today, our Nation continues to grow and evolve while maintaining strong cultural roots. Many members live both within and outside the community, but remain connected through shared traditions, language, and identity.
