REbuilding our governance

Our family leaders and hereditary chiefs working together

At our Da’naxda’xw/Awaetlala Membership meeting on January 21, 2017 a question was proposed about our governance:

  • Do you want it to remain the same with our Hereditary Chief and two elected Council members,
  • Do you want a Hereditary Chiefs Council supported by a Family Leadership Council
  • Do you want to go to full elected Chief and Council
  • Do you want more time

The response included allowing more time for those who could not attend to have their input heard. As a result the survey time was extended and the response supported the option until February 27, 2017.

As you may recall, there was a legal claim against the Da’naxda’xw/Awaetlala Chief and Council. As we heard in the same Membership meeting on January 21, 2017 there was concern to not have the courts or a Judge tell us what we were going to do or how. Responding to that we considered the opportunity to negotiate an agreement to move from the courts dictating this process and as a result there is a court negotiated agreement that has resulted in the formation of a Chief’s Committee to do this work and produce a governance code based on the will of the membership.
